Sure enough, by the end of the night Carol and Hank were practically humping each other on the bar counter. I’m sure the next time I stop by to visit the same melodrama will be playing itself out.

For the rest of the trip me and my mom just hung out, caught up, went to some of our favorite regular restaurants around town, just relaxed.

It was a good visit. I really, really needed to get away from Sage and that house.

Now, I feel refreshed. Ready to get back into the swing of things with school and dealing with Sage. Maybe things will go more smoothly now. Maybe we’ll just be able to avoid each other and not have any more fights or confrontations.

Maybe.

I hop off the bus back home at the stop just feet from my door. As I reach into my pocket for the key, I notice it’s ajar.

The hairs on my neck stand up and a nervous lump sits in my stomach. I slowly push the door open, cautiously peeking inside …

“Holy fuck.” The words leave my mouth in a low, raspy voice.

The place is a wreck. Empty beer cans are strewn across the floor. More than a couple of them have damp stains next to them, testifying to the fact that they weren’t exactly empty when they landed on the rug. A couple random articles of clothing are lying about: socks, shirts – oh God, even a pair of boxers on the kitchen counter!

Some of the furniture in the living room is rearranged and a pile of half-eaten food – pizza, wings, fries – is on the coffee table.

And then I notice Sage sitting up on the couch. His pants are gone and he’s wearing only a tight pair of blue boxer-briefs – something I might be distracted by seeing in other circumstances, but right now I'm so mad that even Sage’s juicy thighs and oh-so-noticeable package fail to register for me.

“Sage! What the hell!” I stomp over to him in the living room.

His face is sour and haggard. He’s clearly suffering a hangover. Good. I hope he’s suffering. “You’re home … early.”

He plants his giant paw on his face and rubs his eyes, still groggy.

“Yeah, I’m home. What the hell did you do here?”

“Just had a party. Relax. It’s no big deal.”

“No big deal!?”

No big deal? No big deal? The place is a wreck. I can already see the coffee table is crooked. One of its legs got damaged. There’s food all over the floor, not just chips that can be vacuumed up, but sauce and dips that will have to be scrubbed hard and long. All the dried beer in the carpet will probably take a streamer to get out …

“Hey, could you two keep it down? I’m trying to sleep off a hangover here.”

My head whips to the side and I notice, snuggled up against the side of the wall, some burly guy, who I don’t know, sleeping on the floor.

“Get up!” I yell at him.
